Take a clean page. Ruin it slightly.

Fold it. Copy it. Copy the copy. Tape over the sentence you were most proud of. Draw an arrow toward something that is not there.

This is not nostalgia for cheap printing. Cheap printing was frequently terrible. That was part of its usefulness. It allowed the artifact to carry evidence of its own making: toner dust, crooked edges, fingerprints, bad registration, the small violence of the stapler.

Perfect surfaces conceal labor. Damaged surfaces confess it.

My drawings begin as arguments with office equipment. A photocopier is a machine designed for obedience, which makes it an excellent collaborator when it begins to fail.

The black streak is not an error. It is a witness.

The torn corner says somebody handled this.

The smudge says a hand was here.

That is enough for me: proof of life.
